Switzerland, a confederation made up of 26 cantons, is a landlocked and largely hilly and mountainous country in the heart of Europe. It borders onto Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy and France. The capital is Bern. With close to 7.8 million residents inhabiting an area of 41,285 km2 (roughly the size of the Netherlands), Switzerland is one of the most densely populated countries in Europe. It has no fewer than four official languages: German (spoken by 63.7% of the population), French (20.4%), Italian (6.5%) and Rhaeto-Romanic (0.5%).
Switzerland boasts a tightly-woven road and rail network with excellent access to its international airports and the neighboring countries, ensuring a high degree of mobility. The punctuality of Swiss public transport is proverbial.
Switzerland is well known for its stability, especially in the areas of public security, private property, politics and social cohesion. Decisions are traditionally taken on a consensus basis, with a large measure of popular involvement and thus popular support. The country also has one of the world’s lowest corruption levels. Last but not least, Switzerland looks back on a long tradition of humanitarian engagement in a variety of fields.
The Swiss economy is one of the strongest, most resilient and most competitive in the world. Excellent international trade relations, freedom of competition, high added value rates, specialized top-end industries, stable political conditions, healthy public finances, low costs of capital and purchasing power stability form the bedrock of the country’s solid and sustainable growth.
