Machine building
Winterthur looks back on a long tradition in machine building. For decades, the two renowned, internationally operating corporations Sulzer and Rieter, together with Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik SLM, were leading in their field and among the city’s prime employers. The local machine building cluster is still dynamic, with mainly medium-sized enterprises now focused more on services and supply than on actual manufacturing.
The industry also maintains close links to Winterthur’s educational institutions. The Zurich University of Applied Sciences’ School of Engineering (öffnet neues Fenster) in Winterthur, for instance, provides the job market with around 300 engineering graduates a year.
