The Winterthur region has a population of more than 180,000, of which just over 105,000 live in the city of Winterthur itself. This makes it the sixth-largest city in Switzerland. Winterthur is surrounded by a green belt with over 20 idyllically set rural municipalities, which add to the attraction of the Winterthur region as a place of residence. The city of Winterthur and its surroundings are renowned for their high quality of life, characterized by comparatively low costs of living, outstanding infrastructure and an ideal location. The range of educational institutions and leisure activities on offer is also hard to beat for a city the size of Winterthur.
The city of Winterthur is an independent economic center that also benefits, in terms of infrastructure and labor market, from the proximity to Zurich. The Winterthur region offers favorable tax rates for natural persons in comparison to other cities and cantons in Switzerland as well as to tax rates in other countries. According to a study on income (PDF, 1.1 MB) (only in german available) (PDF, 100 KB)published by Credit Suisse in November 2008, Winterthur is the only major city surveyed that shows above-average values in terms of disposable income.
As a forward-looking and dynamic economic center, the Winterthur region is endowed with a secure, favorably priced and flexible system of technical infrastructure.
Winterthur is an ideal base for those who travel a lot. It is close to Zurich international airport, is perfectly integrated in the public transport network and is not far from the borders to Germany, France and Austria. And when a less hectic pace is called for, the city and its surroundings offer abundant cycle paths and routes for hiking.
The range of education and training options in the Winterthur region meets all requirements. Most city districts and surrounding municipalities have their own kindergarten, primary and secondary schools. Traditional and innovative ways of teaching are pursued at the various schools and at the institutions of adult education.
The Winterthur region boasts a very broad range of leisure activities. These include a large choice of restaurants offering national and international culinary specialities, diverse shopping opportunities, facilities and sites for a great variety of sports, and a remarkable number of renowned cultural institutions and events. More than enough to satisfy body, mind and spirit.
