Education

Education

The range of education and training on offer in Winterthur is hard to beat for a city of its size. State schools, private schools, vocational training and further education in a multitude of fields are available. There are kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in all districts. Traditional and innovative ways of teaching are interwoven. Models aiming to foster children individually according to their abilities are applied, as are specific programmes for highly gifted children at primary school level. Winterthur also runs various schools for children with special needs. Bridging classes help adolescents make the transition from school to the working world. Graduates from one of the city’s three Gymnasien, or advanced high schools, are entitled to enrol at any one of the country’s universities. The numerous libraries dotted around town also contribute to Winterthur’s educational efforts.

Private schools

Besides state schools, there are privately run schools domiciled in Winterthur that often have distinctive features such as a specific educational concept or a bilingual approach. These schools are recognized by the state, but the costs must be borne by the parents.
