AXA Winterthur is one of the leading private insurance companies in Switzerland and, with a workforce of roughly 3,000, the largest private-sector employer in Winterthur. The city of Winterthur looks back on a long tradition in the general and life insurance sector. Today, it also home to a number of important Swiss health insurers. 

Together with the Zurich University of Applied Sciences Winterthur (ZHAW), the Swiss Insurance Association and the municipality of Winterthur, Location Promotion Winterthur Region initiated the creation of a Centre for Risk and Insurance (öffnet neues Fenster), which opened at the ZHAW in early 2010. This represents a significant step in the development of the insurance cluster in Winterthur.
