Healthcare is a growth industry. Winterthur has made a name for itself as an attractive location for innovative firms in this area. Among the advantages it offers are a mix of different healthcare fields as well as the presence of the Zurich University of Applied Science (ZHAW) (öffnet neues Fenster) and other educational and research institutions, with which a lively exchange of knowledge is maintained.
Tomorrow’s healthcare experts are being trained in Winterthur at the ZHAW’s Health Professions (öffnet neues Fenster) and Institut für Gesundheitsökonomie (öffnet neues Fenster), the Zentrum für Ausbildung im Gesundheitswesen (ZAG) (öffnet neues Fenster) and in various corporate laboratories around town. In Zurich, only 15 kilometers away from the center of Winterthur, there is the recently founded Life Science Zurich Graduate School (öffnet neues Fenster) This joint project of the University of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) has already gained a first-class reputation and is attracting top students from around the world.
The Winterthur region is not just prominent in healthcare education, but also houses over 500 firms working in the healthcare and medical technology sectors. Together, they employ over 10,000 people and form a well-balanced mix of business lines. All of them benefit from the resulting synergies.
These companies also profit from the ongoing know-how exchange with the ZHAW and other schools as well as with the Kantonsspital Winterthur (öffnet neues Fenster) (cantonal hospital), the Klinik Lindberg (öffnet neues Fenster), the RehaClinic (öffnet neues Fenster) and the Integrierte Psychiatrie Winterthur (öffnet neues Fenster) (regional psychiatric clinic). Winterthur is also home to SWICA (öffnet neues Fenster), one of Switzerland’s largest health insurance companies, and the smaller insurers PROVITA Gesundheitsversicherung (öffnet neues Fenster) and KMU Krankenversicherung (öffnet neues Fenster).
